SANDIA RANGER DISTRICT

Casa Loma to Canoncito

Many people enjoy recreating along the trails of the Sandia Ranger District. A new multiple use trail has been proposed by the US Forest Service along the corridor between the Ojito Open Space and Cañoncito, east of the Sandia Wilderness boundary.

But, the proximity of the proposed trail to residential neighborhoods and the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center, and its potential to become part of a trail network that may circumnavigate the Sandia Mountains, causes concerns that it will exacerbate existing problems with visitor use and access through the private and public properties, disturb wildlife and impact water resources.

Therefore, the Casa Loma to Canoncito team has been established within the Sandia Collaborative to consider possible solutions to the conflicts created by the need for public access to existing and future trails within the corridor.
